In an inaugural show highlighted by unprecedented collaborations between South Africa's most prominent design talent, Design Joburg is thrilled to announce the 'DARLINGS' feature, in conjuction with VISI magazine.
This feature space will showcase the latest designs from the ‘darlings of local design’, designers whose work epitomizes the energy and creativity that characterizes South Africa’s bright design scene right now.
The lineup of creatives includes the likes of Haldane Martin, Heather Moore of Skinny laMinx, Andile Dyalvane and Zizipho Poswa of Imiso Ceramics, Mema Design, Minima Design, Louw Roets and Laurie Wiid, with Johannesburg design studios Lemon, Studio 19 and Aureum Design. From Durban we have designer Gareth Henderson, with more to be confirmed.
‘DARLINGS’ will be designed by the HK Studio design team comprising Candice Sheppard, Lianel Ackerman, Lindy van den Berg and Ashleigh Blackman.
HK Studio's challenge is to fuse the latest wares of all these creators into an imaginative and provocative feature stand.
For the organisers, Media 10, it was important that the show “be a showcase for South Africa’s entire design offering and not just those with the resources to exhibit”, says the show’s Event Director Sandra Barrow.
While one of the show's Creative Directors, Andrea Kleinloog, adds: "Darlings was intiallu just a fun idea to make the exhibition accessible, but the response has been so heart-warming that it is turning into a large-scale installation on its own."
Brand-new designs and ranges will be revealed, including a new chair collection by Haldane Martin, new stools by Laurie Wiid, lighting from Studio 19, pinch bowl creation in brilliant tones of indigo from Zizipho Poswa of Imiso Ceramics and a dynamic fabric collection by Heather Moore of Skinny laMinx called Roof Garden, inspired by her water-wise rooftop garden.
