Press Lounge by Fanie van Zyl

Design Joburg, featuring Rooms on View, is a uniquely creative event. Naturally, our Press Lounge reflects the ethos of the show, and is a beautifully designed space for networkers, writers, and content creators. This year, we turned to contemporary interior designer Fanie van Zyl to implement his Press Lounge vision.

He draws inspiration from classic modern thinkers like John Pawson and Vincent Duysen. Tonic’s Greg Gamble and Philippe van der Merwe are also key influencers. We gave Fanie carte blanche and the results promise to impress!

Leading brands take centre stage at this homage to modernism. Look up and be wowed by a Mesh chandelier from ELDC, look down and be wooed by the new black pavers by Corobrik. A shelving system by Lunetta Bartz of Maker acts as room divider, together with a selection of books and objets. Furniture is by Crema, and art by Michael Macgarry punctuates the space.

Fanie van Zyl Studio

Fanie van Zyl qualified as an industrial designer in 2009 but his love for furniture has led him to further pursue a career in interior design. After working at one of South Africas leading interior design firms for several years his passion for furniture and interiors only grew. In 2013 he started Fanie van Zyl Studio and has been focused on interiors and furniture design ever since. Fanie believes that his client’s needs and their own unique style and personality should be expressed through the environment they inhabit, the creation of which he wholeheartedly facilitates in his practice.

MAKER, founded in 2009 by Lunetta Bartz, was developed as a platform to combine her various interests in art, design and furniture. Bartz, a qualified interior designer, has worked on numerous large corporate and private domestic design projects, designing both the space and the furniture for installation. She has also worked in the architectural and graphic design fields. MAKER functions out of the former home of South African artist Edoardo Villa. It is here that Bartz has established her own traditional book bindery where beautiful journals, portfolios and solander boxes are crafted with the utmost care.
